Caffe Mokarabia

I have once again found a place to feed my sweet tooth cravings!

Lately, I’ve been browsing my Zomato app and checking out restaurants and cafes to add on my “places to eat” list. I have this aim that every month I would try out different food spots I’ve never been to and I guess you could say that it is one of my many goals this 2017.

Back to my browsing, my beau kept going on and on about wanting to have some coffee together, and I’m so over Starbucks and Coffee Beanery that I just need to find a different cafe to go to fast. So while checking Zomato, I came across Mokarabia and there were a lot of good reviews. With an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 and majority of the individual reviews giving it a perfect score, who wouldn’t want to check this place out?

There were 3 Mokarabia Cafes in Doha and they can be found at Ezdan Hotel (Westbay), Mall of Qatar (Al Gharafa) and The Pearl Qatar. We checked out the one in the Pearl.

Right off the bat, I was pretty amazed with the interior of this cafe. I’m a bookworm; so when I saw the bookshelves lined with books, you could tell I was totally sold. I could stay here for as long as I want with a hot chocolate and a book in hand, and life would be complete. ❤

Anyway, me and beau find the ipad menu and the live videos of the food pretty cool. Makes you want to order everything on the menu. 😀

Spaghetti Crepe Alfredo – 38 QAR

This saccharine version of a Spaghetti Alfredo is just heavenly. The noodle was made of crepe, meatballs were represented by two balls of vanilla ice cream, and a good helping of melted chocolate as sauce on top was everything. We totally enjoyed this one.

Profiterolles – 38 QAR

There’s nothing too special about the profiteroles in the taste department, but we found the use of dry ice for a bit of showmanship really cool. It makes you enjoy the experience of eating the profiteroles, which I think was the main point of it. Also, the chocolate used here was the same with the Spaghetti Crepe Alfredo, and it just tastes so good.

Vanilla Milkshake – 29 QAR / Mojito Virgin – 38 QAR

I know we’re supposed to drink coffee, but beau just can’t resist trying out their vanilla milk shake; and since I’m not much of a coffee drinker, I opted to try their Mojito Virgin. The mojito is very much like other mojitos I’ve tried and the vanilla milkshake wasn’t bad according to my beau. He still thinks DQ has the number one vanilla milkshake. Ha!

And here are some more random shots taken inside. 😀

So how do I rate the experience? A 4 out of 5 stars. Will definitely invite some friends over and will go back to try more of their desserts. ❤

New Year’s Eve Dinner at Carisma

New Year’s Eve is one of my favorite holiday second to Christmas. Mainly due to the stunning fireworks display you see during this time and the blaring sound from the television as we watch the exciting countdown to the New Year. Of course, such an experience happens when I’m home in the Philippines, and for 6 years now, I have not been home during the holidays.

I know… it’s sad. 😦

In my previous “L’Occitane” post, I’ve mentioned that my father will be home to celebrate Christmas and New Year with the family, leaving me all by lonesome self during the holidays. (Ok, not entirely alone since I have friends and my Beau is still here, but you get the gist of it.) Seeing as there won’t be an actual celebration at my place here in Doha, I’ve decided to have a bit of a fine dining experience with Beau on New Year’s Eve and we chose to try the Italian Restaurant, Carisma.

Carisma Restaurant is an Italian restaurant located in the first floor of Warwick Doha Hotel. It is basically next to the lobby and very easy to spot.

Given that it’s New Year’s Eve, the Menu was not the usual. There is already a set of food choices prepared for a full-course meal and all you had to do is pick between two choices of appetizers, entrée etc. The full-course meal, including drinks, is worth 199 QAR per person.

As always, I feel like clubbing myself for not taking a photo of the Menu. This must be one of the reasons why I won’t be an effective food blogger (especially one that does restaurant reviews). I simply forget to take the required pictures. Ha!

Anyway, I was looking forward to trying their pizza beforehand, but seeing that there was no pizza in the Menu, my beau and I asked if it’s possible to just order one full course meal for only one person plus one order of Pizza Carisma (even if it’s not on the night’s menu). The staff was very kind to accommodate us with the request.

So here are photos (and some appraisals) of our dinner.

Focaccia Bread

The meal started with this focaccia bread. It was a nice start to the meal and actually feels light even after finishing 3 of them.

This one I am calling the shrimp salad, since I have no idea what it was called on the menu. The shrimp in itself isn’t exactly packed with flavor, but the overall dish has that slight sweetness and zesty taste to it, which makes it delicious.

Saffron Risotto

I was a bit disappointed with the Risotto, we didn’t like it very much, and is the only dish we weren’t able to finish. I guess this type of risotto just wasn’t my taste.

Beef Tenderloin

I’m afraid to say that by the time we had the beef tenderloin we were so full we thought we’d explode. Ha! Anyway, I can’t accurately judge the taste of it, all I know is that it wasn’t as juicy as I wanted or expected it to be while I was cutting it in half..

Our pretty dessert

This dessert was very pretty and festive-looking. However, I’m not jumping up and down for it. For me it was good enough dessert that balances out the taste of everything we’ve eaten that night. It wasn’t too sweet, which was good, but for some reason I felt something lacking with it that I’m not sure of. Anyway, we still enjoyed it. 😀

Pizza Carisma (Tomato sauce with buffalo mozzarella cheese, chicken strips, spinach and truffle oil)

The pizza was served together with the risotto, which we were thankful for after realizing that we didn’t like the risotto very much. The pizza was slightly thin crust and tasty without overpowering sauce or toppings.

Overall, the dinner was a 3.5 out of 5.

So that ends our New Year’s Eve dinner! Believe when I say that we were so full we end up sleeping straight away right after the clock strikes 12.

Oh! Before I forget, the kind and very attentive staff gave us these…

I Hop at IHOP

It’s December! Time to do some late shopping for gifts and whatnots.

Last Thursday, my beau and I went to do some bit of window shopping for Christmas gifts and to find something “royal blue” to wear for our coming Christmas Party on the 22nd. Unfortunately, I was having a hard time finding the perfect outfit, or at least the required color. It seems that fall colors are still more prominent inside clothing shops… or maybe I just need to check out more. Anyway, we walked for a very long time until such excursion ends up making me hungry. Ha! 😀

Given that we were at Gulf Mall when I started to get hungry (we were at Landmark first), the first place I thought of to eat was at IHOP. It’s been almost a year when I last visited the place so I convinced my beau to eat there again.

And here’s what we ordered…

Tropical Island Twist (left) and Splashberry (right)

A cocktail of lemonade, lemon-lime, strawberries, mango syrup etc. These refreshing IHOP splashers are all that!

Volcano Shrimp

My beau and I love to eat shrimp. So we always order at least one shrimp dish on every menu if available. In this case, we ordered the Volcanic Shrimp, which is their version of PF Chang’s Dynamite Shrimp and Red Lobster’s Sweet Chili Shrimp. But I think it’s taste is more similar to the latter.

Jambalaya pasta (i forgot the exact name. :( )
Jambalaya pasta (i forgot the exact name. 😦 )

I honestly forgot the name of this pasta dish and I can’t find it in Zomato’s menu, all I remember is that it has “Jambalaya” in it’s name. Anyway, I love the pasta! It was very well-seasoned which is what I liked best.

Big Steak Omellette
Big Steak Omelette

Speaking of well-seasoned, the omelette isn’t that. Despite it’s very tasty appearance, the omelette just feels bland. It wasn’t the first time I ordered an omelette at IHOP and find it lacking in the salt department. Anyway, it must be the way they cook their omelettes, but I really prefer my meal well-seasoned.

And last but not the least… an IHOP experience is never complete without their signature buttermilk pancakes! The 3 pancakes are free, by the way, since we ordered one of their omelettes.

Buttermilk Pancakes ❤

Here’s also a photo of the pancake’s complementary syrups. I prefer the “Old Fashioned” one. I think nothing beats a classic taste! ❤

So there you have it! Our very scrumptious meal. ❤

A Tea of Pearls

Chatime has finally come to Doha. Yey!

13553369_10207735429277405_1111773579_n

A few days before the start of Ramadan, after hearing the news of a Chatime branch here in Doha, two of my colleagues invited me to come and check out the place at The Pearl Qatar. There we found the famous bubble tea chain in a small corner inside Spinney’s – we went in circles just finding the place. The ambiance is quite cozy – pretty simple with their signature colors of purple and white. Because the place is small, inside seats are limited, probably 3 tables with 2 to 3 chairs each if I remember correctly. But seats are also available outside, a good place to enjoy your milk tea while chilling out and appreciating the weather and view.

13522694_10207731947910373_6136964780106825728_o

The menu is almost the same in the Philippines, but with the surprising addition of Karak Milk Tea, which I found interesting. Karak tea is, after all, pretty delicious, but I usually drink it hot and definitely without tapioca pearls. I’m thinking of trying that one on my next visit. Also, it’s good to know that they ask the level of sugar and ice desired for each drink.

The cakes are fairly simple. Nothing too fancy.

They have the usual strawberry cheesecake, blueberry cheesecake, honey cake, lotus cake and a number of muffins, sandwiches and croissants. Pretty basic I should say.

cakes

So for our orders, I opted to try their Taro Milk Tea (Taro is basically one of my usual go-to flavors when I order Bubble Tea in other places), which I unfortunately felt a tad disappointed about. I usually go for normal sugar level in my first try of a particular milk tea to have a baseline reference on how sweet they make a drink, but this Taro is not sweet, and for a normal level of sugar, it was bland for my taste. Maybe they’re not just as sweet as other Bubble tea shops, but anyways, I was not satisfied.

Also, there were no tapioca pearls in my Taro Milk Tea. I learned later on, after I asked one of the staff,  that the tapioca pearls are only added as ordered. Meaning there would be “additional payment for the pearls”. What a bummer! In the Philippines, the pearls are automatically part of the drink you paid for. So yeah, I did feel bad about that one.

Anyway, my friends Rachelle, Janel and JJ ordered Oolong Milk Tea, Chocolate Mouse, and Taro Milk Tea respectively. As far as I know they are more satisfied with their choice than I was with mine.

To complement our drinks, we also ordered Blueberry cheesecake and Lotus cake which are not too sweet – a good thing as compared with my taro milk tea. I just didn’t like that the outer shell is so hard. It’s like I have to dig into the center to be able to get to the cheesecake itself. Good thing the taste made up for it.

Overall, it wasn’t bad, but it certainly was not as good as I expected.

The Colorful World of Popcorn Girl

For the first time last February 20, me and my colleagues went to check out Popcorn Girl at Ezdan Mall. I’ve been so excited after hearing the news that Popcorn Girl will soon open in Qatar in a matter of days. Who won’t be?

Popcorn Girl, as you may know, is a Las Vegas-based gourmet and confections store. With over 50 flavors of gourmet popcorn, chocolates, candies, fudges, ice cream etc. to choose from, the place is one kid’s own paradise. Of course, someone who is also young at heart would totally appreciate the wonder of Popcorn Girl, just like I did.

The store’s interior is vibrant with color. Like the rainbow puked on it. Everything is sweet and delightful. I felt like a child let loose on a playground. My eyes are practically dancing… wanting to take everything in and not wanting to miss anything.

Another thing about the store I liked is that part of it is like a mini cafe of sort. There’s a selection of coffee, milkshakes, tea and fudge cakes. I would love to try them on my next visit.

So what's on the Menu?

Of course, a tour at Popcorn Girl won’t be complete without meeting Popcorn Girl herself!
