Birthday Dinner at Maison De Sushi

Birthdays are a perfect excuse to binge in great food; in my case, that meant Japanese food.

I can practically name two places on top of my head that I wanted to try Japanese food. The first one was a newly opened and well-known Japanese restaurant, and the other one was a Japanese buffet restaurant, which was highly recommended by a former colleague.

It took me the last minute to finally made a decision, and for obvious reasons, the Japanese buffet won. What reason? It’s a B-U-F-F-E-T. I plan on bingeing, remember?

A lot may have heard and may have tried dining in this restaurant already. I, myself, have known about it since last year, but have yet to get the chance to try it. This is definitely a good chance to do so, and yes, it’s Maison De Sushi.

Firstly, let me share some food photos I was able to capture on my phone just to show how scrumptious our dinner was.

Shrimp Tempura

The shrimp tempura is definitely one of our favorites. We ordered it twice and would probably have had two more rounds if we weren’t so full from the amount of sushi we’ve tried in between.

Sushi Heaven! Hear me scream people! I forgot some of the names though. I did mention before that I’m terrible at food blogging, I tend to forget important details. In any case, you can check their Tablet Menu to see photos of everything they have. Though not original, it’s pretty cool that they’re also using a Tablet. I appreciate it when I’m able to see what my food is supposed to look like, whether it would be an accurate representation or not.

The Dragon Sushi (It is not its exact name, but yes I’m calling it that), is a definite must-try. I highly recommend it. It was delicious. However, since it is part of their “special menu,” there was an added 25QR in our bill, but definitely worth the price. The Beef Teppanyaki was also part of the “special menu,” and we were told by someone (I’m going to assume he’s the owner or the manager) that it was a new addition they’ve created. I  have to say, it was kind of him to personally come to our table. I also ordered their Candied Chicken Wings just because I happen to love the taste of sweetness in chicken.

Matcha/Vanilla Ice Cream with Banana Tempura

There’s not much variety on desserts, which I think is pretty standard with Japanese restaurants or mainly with Asian restaurants, so we just opted for their ice cream. Actually, we wanted to try their charcoal ice cream, but unfortunately, it is not available at that time.

Other foods we’ve ordered (that I have no photos of) are their Miso Soup, Pad Thai Noodles, and Tempura Rolls. Not much of a fan of the Tempura Rolls though. It has to be eaten as soon as it hit the table to appreciate the crunch of the seaweed wrap. It is not bad but still not as tasty as the others.

Hmm… my face is shaped like a steamed bun. 😀

As you must know, my birthday happen to fell on a Thursday, so I had to make a reservation beforehand since I’ve been told it could get really crowded on Thursdays.  When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and immediately sent to our table.

Since the staff was aware of my birthday, while we were waiting for our orders, the lights suddenly dimmed, and a group of women in kimonos sang me a birthday song as they clap their hands and twirl their Japanese umbrellas (wagasa). I was surprised that they have an official photographer for celebrations like this and took photos of my family and me with his SLR. He asked for my email afterward and sent me the pictures he took for free!

Furthermore, as seen in my photo above, instead of a cake, I was given 4 pieces of sushi with a lit candle. You didn’t read that incorrectly, there really were 4 pieces of sushi at that time, but I was so excited trying to hold it up while they were taking my photo that one fell off. Ha!

Anyway, I find the idea of an official photographer taking photos of their customers during a celebration like this pretty impressive and considerate of them. Added points for customer service if I do say so myself.

FEB Day 17 : What do I want to learn?

A lot of things really, but mostly I want to learn a new language. I guess right off the bat that’s what I first thought of among the long list of things I want to learn. There’s a certain fulfillment I get when I learn a new language or at least when I’m able to understand foreign words when I hear them. Just being able to pronounce languages correctly makes me proud of myself already. 😀

I remember, because I aim of going to Japan someday, how I tried to self-learn Nihongo and even bought a Japanese two-way dictionary containing different phrases for specific situations that you can use to properly communicate with the locals. And because I was watching a lot of jdoramas and anime at that time, it helped me in learning how to pronounce words as correctly as I can without much difficulty.

Now that I’m an expat here in Qatar, I did thought of learning at least basic Arabic. I admit it was very hard for me, since my heart was not fully into it, but knowing that I live here and my profession puts me in front of locals and the arab speaking community on a daily basis, I know that I should try harder to learn.

Anyway, I’m ending this post with this video.

FEB Day 16 : An important quote

As a sentimental person, I go “aawww” for inspirational quotes (or just quotes in general), I have a lot of it in my repertoire. I have this habit of collecting quotes that demonstrates my inner thoughts and feelings.

I can think of several (meaning A LOT!) quotes that I would love to share with you guys, but as this won’t be enough in one post, I’ll be sharing just this one quote (out of a hundred) that inspired me and in which I try my best to incorporate in my daily life.

“If you measure your success by someone’s failure, then you are also a failure. If you aim to be like someone else, then you are limiting yourself on what you can truly achieve. But if you aim to improve on what you have already achieved, I consider you a winner because winners always want to do well in what they do without limiting themselves.” —  Anonymous

I regret to say that I don’t have an inkling as to who quoted above citation. I’ve read this quote years ago, sometime in 2009 or 2010, and I’m baffled why the name of whoever said above statement was not included with it. Either there really was no name on it or I just copy-pasted the quote and forgot to include the source. I did try googling it before finishing this post, but so far there were two persons appearing on my search. I’ll update as soon as I’m positive who it was.

Anyway, the quote was pretty self-explanatory – forthright and very clear. In life, we do feel unwanted jealousy towards others success and we feel defeated at times, which I think is normal. But what’s not normal is when our feelings of defeat cloud our minds and we thought that other people’s failure is equivalent to an achievement of our own, which is funny because you didn’t really accomplish anything.

This is something I’ve mostly observed in the workplace where unwanted jealousy towards your peers can occur. When someone is getting more recognition than you are and howthat person’s “moment of failure” no matter how small makes you rejoice for some reason, thinking you’ve won or achieved something. It’s totally twisted thinking and only proves how more of a loser and undeserving of anything you really are.

Not all of us excel at everything so always aim to be a better version of who you are now and refrain from comparing yourself from others too much. We all have innate talents we and others can be proud of. Just work hard and be happy ❤

FEB Day 15 : The movie you tell your friends to see.

Ok, I’m stuck! As much as I love watching movies, there isn’t a particular “movie” that I feel the need to tell my friends to see because honestly we all happen to like the same type of movies and they almost always watch them before I even did.

Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, White Chicks (if you’re looking for comedy), Star Wars Trilogy (I’m talking about IV, V, VI), Pirates of the Carribean, etc. – all these I would recommend to everyone.

However, If you’re going to ask me what movies that are “currently showing” in the cinemas that I would like my friends to watch (even if some of them already did) then I can name a few.

Return of Xander Cage xXx

Welcoming back Xander Cage! Donnie Yen’s fight scene kicks ass!

Resident Evil (Final Chapter)

Giving me palpitations since 2002.

John Wick 2

Haven’t watched this yet actually, but I’m going to. 😀

Friends, please watch all these movies. Not only are they action-packed and have very cool fight scenes, but all three also have the very gorgeous Ruby Rose as well. And yes I’m promoting them because of Ruby Rose. Ha! ❤

FEB Day 11 : Three Favorite Book Characters

Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy

I adore Lizzy and Mr. Darcy. They are for me the perfect couple despite each other’s faults. It might seem that they won’t end up together but they did and I was pleased. True love does find a way to bring two hearts meant for  each other.

Elizabeth Bennet, one of the two central characters in Pride and Prejudice is regarded as one of Jane Austen’s “most admirable and endearing heroines” and I could not agree more.  I adored her character for the simple fact that she’s a woman with a mind of her own. I liked her character because of how I find her relatable plus I love that she’s a well-read person who is full of wit and intelligence.

Mr. Darcy, on the other hand, is the other half of Pride and Prejudice’s central character. He is the epitome of a “aloof, romantic hero”, which made him my Ideal Man for years. I was really rooting for him to end up with Elizabeth and was really happy when they did. I had so much feels every time these two characters appear in every chapter. Anyways, they certainly both are on top of my favorites list.

Hermione Granger

Hermione is one of the protagonist of the Harry Potter books. Like Elizabeth Bennet, she too loves to read. Already, I’m giving her 100 points just for that reason. Her extensive knowledge of different subjects has helped her, Harry and Ron in getting out of sticky situations. Her logical mind and upright behaviour, may have annoyed some characters in the books, but she’s a perfect know-it-all and I love her for it.
